No Art Journal Caravan This Year

I think the flu germs are finally waning, so you should be pretty safe in reading this post. Phew! The norovirus is nothing you want to get.

Moving right along . . . I really hoped to be able to join the Art Journal Caravan for 2012, but it looks like the caravan is going to leave without me. My camel is going to get a long nap this year. He deserves it anyway!

Taking that early retirement last June has left us broke, broke, broke. I'm not complaining, though. At least I was able to take a retirement while a retirement was still available to school employees. Michigan is so short of money that it makes one wonder what is going to happen to the school districts. I worked for Ann Arbor Public Schools for 26 years, and it seems like they had to cut millions of dollars every year for the past who-knows-how-many years. I heard they have to cut something like another $15,000,000.00 out of next year's school budget. Wow. It's going to mean some schools will have to close and more employees will lose their jobs. My position was actually cut last year, but that was alright, because I had had enough. It was definitely affecting my health. I had to not only report to the IT Director, but also to the three principals of the schools I gave computer support to. Too many bosses! Too much stress! I miss some of the people I worked with terribly, but I don't miss the job at all.

That was a roundabout way of telling you that there is no telling what you will see on my blog this year. I did join Tam's year long Art Life Book course (see sidebar for info if you are interested in checking it out) which will be all about creating multimedia works that we will end up binding into a book. My inner critic is already fighting me, and I am trying to beat him down so I can start the first project. I can't believe how ridiculous it is to know I can create art, but always feel paralyzed to start it. That was one of the reasons I wanted to take this course. Hopefully I'll be able to create some physical art and post it here on my blog. I know I'll be looking forward to seeing what all of you are doing this year! I hope we have a good art year!

Art Journal Caravan Adventure Quest - Zentangle Mandalas

Our September Adventure Quest for the Art Journal Caravan was to try creating zentangle mandalas. I have always wanted to buy a real zentangle kit since the first time I saw them on the zentangle website. If you haven't visited the website, you can find it at: http://www.zentangle.com/index.php The idea of sitting and doodling little pictures sounded very relaxing to me. They don't require expert drawing ability. Well, to make a long story short, I just haven't had the money to order a kit, and my inner critic kept preventing me from grabbing a pencil or marker and just trying it without any instruction.

Since today (actually yesterday at this point) was the last day of September, I decided to beat up my inner critic, grab a extra fine point sharpie and just try creating a zentangle mandala. As usual, whenever I tell my inner critic where to go, I succeed in doing what I have thought for months I could never do. I actually ended up creating two versions of the same mandala. I drew the zentangle mandala, then scanned it, and played with it in Photoshop.

Version number one:

Each of us has a camel for a mascot during our Art Journal Caravan journey. I named mine Watson. Watson was a little bit upset when he saw my first zentangle mandala. He wanted a chance to play with one, too. Not wanting to have an upset camel, I let him create the second version:

Both of us were quite happy with our results!

This made me realize that the yearlong journaling caravan will be over in 3 months. (The Art Journal Caravans are sponsored by Tangie Baxter at http://shop.scrapbookgraphics.com/home.php in case anyone is interested in doing it next year. Man! I need to start charging commission for all this free advertising.) Time really does fly when you are having fun. I've created many digital journaling pages that I definitely enjoyed doing. I'd like to print them all out and bind them into a homemade book. I'm afraid that the cost of all of that inkjet printing might be prohibitive, but at least I have them saved on my computer. I've even been faithfully backing up my hard drive. The problem is, it's always nicer to have a printed copy just in case your computer or the electricity goes. I'll have to figure out a way to do this! Does anyone have any rich relatives about ready to drop dead? Oh my. What am I saying? That's what happens when I make a post at 1:45 am! I need to be asleep.

My Camel is Ready!

Oh my. That title must sound strange! But I think I already told you I joined a year long journaling group called Studio Caravan 2011 by Tangie Baxter. It starts officially Jan. 1. Knowing we are sitting here with keen anticipation, Tangie gave us a camel to put in a journaling page to get our creative juices going. We were suppose to get our camel ready for the journey. Here's the page I created. :o)

Art Journal Caravan 2011

I'm really excited! I've joined a year long art project called Art Journal Caravan 2011. It is sponsored by Studio Tangie at Scrapbook Graphics. If you would like to read about it, here is the link: http://shop.scrapbookgraphics.com/Art-Journal-Caravan-Expedition-2011.html It officially starts January 1 st., but I couldn't wait. I created my opening page to put in my journal. It feels so good to join a group of like minded artists.
